Joe is a Grammy and W.C. Handy award winner for his work with Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band.
He has toured with Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band, Bonnie Raitt, Little Feat, The Band, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, Otis Rush, Delbert McClinton, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, The Blues Brothers, Lou Ann Barton, Joe Ely and Johnny Rivers.
Joe began his musical career in Corpus Christi, Texas, starting several Blues and R&B bands with his best friend and original blues partner in crime, guitarist Cid Sanchez before moving to Austin, Texas in 1976.
That same year he joined the legendary rhythm and blues band, Paul Ray and the Cobras which featured a 21 year old Stevie Ray Vaughan. The Cobras were one of the seminal groups that helped define Austin as the music city it has become today.
As a member of the Antones house band, Joe backed many blues artists including John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, Otis Rush, James Cotton, Memphis Slim, Junior Wells, Hubert Sumlin, Hank Ballard, Jimmy Rogers, Matt 'Guitar' Murphy, Lazy Lester, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker, Little Johnny Taylor, David 'Fathead' Newman, Dr John and many others.
After touring with The Cobras for several years, Joe made his way out to Los Angeles in 1986 where he remains a session and tour musician.
Joe has composed music for TV and Film and is a founding member of The Phantoms Blues Band who has released 5 CDs. In recent years, Joe has released two CDs of his own music. 'Texacali Horns' (Darrell Leonard and Joe Sublett) and 'Subtones' (Joe Sublett).
These days Sublett works with The Blues Brothers, Taj Mahal and the Phantom Blues Band, Martin Guigui's L.A. Allstars and The Guitar Legends Band featuring Billy Gibbons among others.
Joe still does session work with a variety of different artists.
